Trond Helge Torsvik
Trond Helge Torsvik (born October 12, 1957 ) is a Norwegian geologist and geophysicist .
Torsvik has been Professor at the Center of Physics of Geological Processes (PGP) at the University of Oslo since 2007 . He is also with the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) and from 2004 adjunct professor at the Witwatersrand University .
In 1993/94 he was visiting scholar at the University of Michigan and from 1999 to 2001 at Lund University .
Torsvik received his PhD in geophysics in Bergen in 1985 and initially dealt with rock magnetism and paleomagnetism . He is known for the reconstruction of plate tectonics in the Paleozoic , combining paleontological and paleomagnetic investigations and collaborating with the British paleontologists Stuart McKerrow and Robin Cocks . He is also interested in the mechanisms underlying plate tectonics.
In 2015 he received the Leopold von Buch plaque and the Arthur Holmes Medal of the European Geosciences Union . He is a member of the Royal Danish and Norwegian Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea .
