Tsar to Lenin (German: Vom Zar zu Lenin ) is a documentary film with recordings from the period of the Russian February Revolution in 1917 , the October Revolution in the same year, and the civil war from 1918 to 1921 . It is based on the film collection of Herman Axelbank and was completed by Max Eastman in January 1931 . The film premiered on March 6, 1937 at the Filmarte Theater in New York . Despite gushing criticism in the New York Times , Tsar to Lenin was banned from cinemas due to political pressure. The film was then forgotten.

The material collected by Axelbank for the film was acquired by Raphael Nussbaum in 1961 and formed the core of his documentary From the Tsar to Stalin . In January 1978 the American Workers League acquired the film rights from Herman Axelbank, who died the following year.

Tsar to Lenin was released on DVD in 2012 by Mehring Books .
