Tschaghtscharan ( Pashto / Dari :چغچران, DMG Čaġčarān ) is the capital of the central Afghan province of Ghor and the name of the surrounding district.
The city is located at an altitude of 2280 m on the Hari Rud river . It has about 15,000 inhabitants, making it the largest in Ghor Province. The majority of the population is attributed to the Tajik ethnic group.
Chaghtscharan is roughly in the middle of a central route through Afghanistan , which connects the city of Herat with the Afghan capital Kabul over a distance of almost 800 kilometers . However, this country road is in poor condition and only passable for part of the year due to flooding and snowfall in winter. Tschaghtscharan has an airport, which ensures connections to other Afghan cities through domestic flights.
In June 2005, the ISAF set up a Provincial Reconstruction Team under the leadership of the Lithuanian armed forces in Chaghtaran.
