The Chatyrköl ( Kyrgyz Чатыркөл ) is an outflow-free lake in the Central Asian highlands in the south of Kyrgyzstan .
The Chatyrköl has an area of 170.6 km² and lies at an altitude of 3520 m . In recent years the water level has fallen and the water surface has decreased accordingly. Its maximum depth is given as 19 m. The mean depth is 5 m. The Chatyrköl lies in a depression between the Atbashi mountain range in the north and the more than 4500 m high mountain range of the Torugart Mountains in the south. East of the Chatyrköl is the Aksaital , which belongs to the Toxkan catchment area .
The lake is mainly fed by the snowmelt . The Kökaigyr , which flows into the northeastern bank, is one of the main tributaries of the lake. Due to the lack of runoff, the lake is slightly salty. The lake surface freezes between October and the end of April. The ice thickness is usually 0.25–1.5 m.
The next larger town is Atbaschy, about 100 km away . The Torugart Pass south of the lake forms an access point from China .
The lake is considered an important location in terms of global biodiversity and has been on the Ramsar list since 2005 .
