Cherkasy Forest

The Cherkasy Forest ( Ukrainian Черкаський бір ) is a pine-wooded area in the Ukrainian Cherkassy Oblast . The forest is located north and northwest of the city of Cherkassy and serves as a local recreation area. It originated in the pre-glacial period.

The area has an area of ​​approx. 28,500 ha and borders the Irdyner swamp . The relief shows only small sandy hills.

About 800 species of higher plants are known here, including 18 on the Red List of Threatened Species of Ukraine. The Scots pine makes up 65% of all types of wood. There are also English oak , hornbeam , ash-maple and winter linden . Red elder , Tatar steppe maple and rowan can be found in the undergrowth . Among the shrubs and grasses, dyer's gorse and country riding grass are noteworthy, as well as bracken and lily of the valley . Furthermore, there are meadow pasque flower , round-leaved bellflower , silver cinquefoil , blood-red cranesbill , heather carnation , celandine , meadow fescue , real bedstraw , forest strawberry , common yarrow , heather and umbel winter love . Rosemary daphne is rarely found . The species two-leaved forest hyacinth , wild garlic , small snowdrop and red forest bird belong to the plants named in the Red List of Ukraine.

Wild boar , roe deer , red fox , brown hare , pine marten , Eurasian squirrel and European beaver belong to the fauna . Rarely found Mediterranean water shrew , southern birch mouse , steppe polecat , European badger , European mink and moose . Birds include wood warbler , fitis , great tit , blackbird , tawny owl and great spotted woodpecker . In addition, reptiles such as the European pond turtle , the eastern green lizard , grass snake or adder , amphibians such as pond newt , northern crested newt or common toad and many insects occur.

Some areas and objects are under nature protection. The forest ecology is affected by the industrial area of ​​the city as well as by logging of 12,300 cubic meters annually. Furthermore, part of the area is used for military exercises and as a garbage dump.
