The area is about 7,375 hectares and the peat layer is about 3.6 - 7.5 m thick.

It lies partly in the Dnepr highlands in the Eurasian steppe , bordering the Donetsk Plateau in the southeast . The swamp occupies the former river bed of the Dnieper. As a terrace (geology) , the area extends to the highlands. The directions of flow resulted from the retreat of the glacier, as a result of which the amount of water decreased. In the opposite direction, the Irdynka and Irdyn rivers drain from the swamp.

The diverse vegetation of the area includes black alder , aspen , birch , willow and sedge . There are also reeds and cattails . The foothills in the direction of Cherkassy merge into a wooded area with pine stands.

The fish population is rather poor with crucian carp , tench and mud whip. The reptiles include European pond turtles , slow worms , eastern green lizards , grass snakes and adder , while amphibians include pond newts , common toads and tree frogs . There are 189 species of birds in the area, 25 of which are on the Ukraine Red List. The most common are the chaffinch , great tit , great spotted woodpecker , blackbird and song thrush . The native mammals include wild boar , roe deer , vulpes , brown hare , pine marten , squirrel , muskrat , European beaver , red deer and raccoon dog . There are also small colonies of Noctule .

Peat mining was first started in 1856 near Smila . In the southern swamps, further attempts at manual peat extraction and drainage were made in the early 20th century. In 1938 excavators were used. In the German-Soviet war here, no work took place. From 1963 new mining zones were created, from which a lake has formed.
