Tschogha Misch (or Chogha Mish Persian تپه چغامیش Tappeh-ye Choghā Mīsh , DMG Tappe-ye Čoḡā Mīš ) is the most extensive prehistoric and protohistoric archaeological site on the territory of ancient Elam in today's province of Chuzestan (at that time: Chusistan ) in southwestern Iran . The approximately 17-hectare facility is located between Dezful and Shushar and just under 5 km east of Tschogha Bonut (Čoḡā Bonut), another historical site.

The settlement of Tschogha Misch goes back to the 8th millennium BC. BC and thus found its origin in the Copper Age . Almost continuous evidence of this has been found since the 6th millennium BC. BC ( Neolithic ) to the 4th millennium BC BC, when the first clay tablets in Mesopotamian Uruk were made that had cuneiform scripts. In this respect, it is assumed that Chogha Misch was a cultural and social center in the region of Chusistan. Today's meaning lies in the fact that the development of writing originated here.

archeology

The excavations in Tschogha Misch go back to the initiative of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago , one of the world's most important research centers for Near Eastern antiquity and Egyptology . The excavations were carried out from 1961 to 1978. Pinhas Delougaz and Helene J. Kantor were in charge of the excavation project . Many of the excavation pieces and the associated records fell victim to the Islamic Revolution that began in 1979 .
