from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tshibumba Kanda Matulu (* 1947 in Lubumbashi , Democratic Republic of the Congo ; lost 1981 in Zaire ) was a Congolese painter .

life and work

Tshibumba Kanda Matulu worked as a painter in Lumbumbashi for many years, selling small figurative paintings to local customers. The anthropologist Johannes Fabian (* 1937), who lives in Lubumbashi, supported Kanda Matulu so that he was able to use his knowledge of the history of his country and his narrative talent for the series "101 Works" (acrylic on canvas).

Tshibumba Kanda Matulu shows the tumultuous history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo chronologically and in detail in a relatively simple, almost cartoon-like style, often with added explanatory text. In 2000 the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam dedicated an exhibition to Kanda Matulu, and in 2017 the series “101 Works” was shown at documenta 14 .
