Johannes Fabian
Johannes Fabian (born May 19, 1937 in Glogau ) is a German anthropologist . He is a professor emeritus at the Universiteit van Amsterdam .
Life
Johannes Fabian was born in Glogau in 1937 . After graduating from school in 1956, Fabian began studying in Mödling and Bonn . There he studied, among others, Paul Schebesta , philosophy , theology , anthropology , linguistics and history . In 1962 Fabian moved to Munich and studied anthropology , sociology and early history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .
As early as 1963, he continued his studies in anthropology at the University of Chicago , where he completed his master's degree in 1965 and received his doctorate in 1969. As early as 1968 he gave lectures at Northwestern University in Evanston , Illinois , where he subsequently accepted an assistant position at the Department of Anthropology.
In 1973 he became a professor at the University of Zaire and became President of the Faculty of Anthropology and Sociology. However, he returned a year later to the United States and was Professor of Anthropology at Wesleyan University in Middletown , Connecticut until 1979. The following year he became Professor and Chair of the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Non-Western Sociology at the University of Amsterdam . In 2002 he retired.
Fabian was visiting professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the University of Cologne and the University of Paris . In addition, in the spring of 1995 he held the Theodor Heuss visiting professorship at the New School for Social Research in New York City .

In his career Fabian carried out various field studies, for example on religious movements in Zaire and Congo . He has also carried out various studies on ethno-linguistic issues.
