Tsugio Sekiguchi

Sekiguchi Tsugio ( Japanese. 関口 存 男 ; born November 21, 1894 in Himeji , Hyōgo Prefecture ; † July 25, 1958 ) was a Japanese linguist and actor.

Life

Tsugio Sekiguchi was born the son of a soldier in the Japanese city of Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture . Sekiguchi graduated from the Army Officer School and then studied at the philosophical faculty of the Sophia University in Tokyo and French at a private language school, where he soon advanced from student to teacher.

After graduating from the Philosophical Faculty of Sophia University in 1919, he worked for the Foreign Ministry's language department . From 1923 he taught at the Hōsei University in Tokyo. In the years from 1938 to 1944, in addition to his university activities, Sekiguchi was in charge of teaching German on state broadcasting (the predecessor institution of today's NHK ).

As a highly talented Germanist, Sekiguchi was highly regarded in Japanese academic circles in the prewar period, but was relieved of all his offices after the end of the war due to political circumstances.

It was not until 1950 that Sekiguchi was able to resume his former scientific occupations. He also taught at Waseda University in Tokyo until his death in June 1958 .

Outside of his academic career, Sekiguchi has appeared in the theater as a member of the Shingeki movement since his youth. With the introduction of silent films, Sekiguchi also took part in two film productions as an actor.

In 1994 his complete work Sekiguchi Tsugio chosakushū ( 関口 存 男 著作 集 ) was published by Sanshusha in three series: Doitsu gogaku hen zen-13-kan ( ド イ ツ 語 学 篇 全 13 巻 ) on the German language in 13 volumes ( ISBN 978-4- 384-00060-3 ), the special volume Bekkan doitsu-go ronshū ( 別 巻 ド イ ツ 語 論 集 ; ISBN 978-4-384-00065-8 ) as a collection of his German-language articles, as well as Hon'yaku / sōsaku hen zen-10-kan ( 翻 訳 ・ 創作 篇 全 10 巻 ) in 10 volumes ( ISBN 978-4-384-00061-0 ) with his translations and literary works.
