The tuber maxillae ( Latin tuber "cusp", maxilla "upper jaw"; synonym: Eminentia maxillae ) is a bony elevation of the upper jaw behind the last molar . It is the dorsal (back) wall of the maxillary sinus (sinus maxillaris) in which the foramina alveolaria corporis maxillae are located. Branches of the maxillary nerve , the rami alveolares superiores posteriores, run through the small openings in the canals alveolares to the molars of the upper jaw. The maxillary tuberosity is the dorsal end of the alveolar ridge on the left and right. The pterygomandibular plica begins dorsal to the maxillary tuberosity .

Function in dentures

The maxillary tuberosity has an important function in the fabrication of a full denture in the upper jaw. If the tuber is pronounced, then the prosthesis can encompass the tuber in the paratubar space, which considerably improves the hold of a prosthesis when biting off.

The degradation of the jawbone is less in the area of the maxillary tuberosity, so that this area can also be suitable for anchoring an implant in the case of severely degraded jawbones .

Tooth extraction complication

In a ankylosis of the tooth with the surrounding bone, at Mitfassen of the bone at the forceps extraction, at too high a power insert or thin alveolar walls , it may in an extraction of wisdom tooth come to a fracture of the maxillary tuberosity. The fragment is repositioned and fixed in order to preserve the tuberosity. After the bone fragment has healed, the tooth can be surgically removed while protecting the tube.
