Tudor S. Ratiu (born March 18, 1950 in Timișoara ) is a Romanian - American mathematician who deals with geometric analysis and dynamic systems .

Ratiu studied at the University of Timisoara with a diploma in 1974 and received his doctorate in 1980 under Jerrold Marsden at the University of California, Berkeley ( Euler-Poisson Equations on Lie Algebras ). He was then Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor , from 1983 Associate Professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson and from 1987 Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Santa Cruz . After retiring, he became a professor at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

He deals with geometrical aspects of mechanics (of particle systems and continuum mechanics) and related symplectic geometry , infinitely dimensional Lie groups, bifurkaton theory and global analysis. The topics were also the focus of the Berkeley group around Marsden and Alan Weinstein , with whom he worked.

He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). From 1984 to 1987 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 1994/95 he was a Fulbright Scholar at IHES and in 1994 Miller Professor in Berkeley. He and Juan-Pablo Orteaga received the Ferran-Sunyer-i-Balaguer Prize in 2000 for the book Hamiltonian Singular Reduction . Ratiu has been a member of Academia Europaea since 2019 .

He has been married since 1978 and has three children.
