Jerrold Eldon Marsden (born August 17, 1942 in Ocean Falls , British Columbia , † September 21, 2010 in Pasadena , California ) was a Canadian mathematician who dealt with differential geometry , geometric mechanics and symplectic geometry, among other things .

Live and act

Marsden studied mathematics at the University of Toronto and Princeton University , where he received his doctorate in 1968 with Arthur Wightman ( Hamiltonian One Parameter Groups and Generalized Hamiltonian Mechanics ). He was then a professor at the University of California, Berkeley . From 1995 he was a professor in the Control and Dynamical Systems Department at Caltech . He was visiting professor in Edinburgh , Hamburg , Munich , Paris , Toronto and at Cornell University, among others . He is one of the founders of the Fields Institute in Toronto, named after John Charles Fields (1991).

Marsden founded the (symplectic) reduction theory of mechanical systems with symmetry with Alan Weinstein . He worked in the most diverse areas of application of mechanics (mechanics of rigid bodies, plasma physics, hydrodynamics, elasticity theory, celestial mechanics and space travel), in particular control theory.

In 1990 Marsden received the Norbert Wiener Prize . In 1997 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2000 he received the Max Planck Research Prize and in 2005 the von Neumann Prize of the SIAM . Since 2006 he has been a Fellow of the Royal Society in London. In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( On the motion of incompressible fluids with DG Ebin).
