The Tug Fork is the 150 miles long right-hand headwaters of the Big Sandy River in southwest Virginia and West Virginia and east Kentucky .

In the 19th century, the Hatfield-McCoy feud took place in the valley of the Tug Fork between Pike County, Kentucky and Mingo Counties, West Virginia .

The Tug Fork originates in the Appalachian Mountains in southern McDowell County in the US state of West Virginia near the Virginia border. After that, it meanders mainly to the northwest. 32 kilometers northwest of Welch , West Virginia, it forms the border between West Virginia and Virginia for 6.4 kilometers. On the rest of its course it forms the border between West Virginia (east) and Kentucky (west) until it forms the Big Sandy River together with the Levisa Fork River at Louisa at an altitude of 166  m .
