Tullamarine is a suburb of Melbourne in the state of Victoria , Australia . According to the 2016 census, it had 6,605 inhabitants. It is located 17 km outside the city center and is part of the Hume City council .
The name probably goes back to the Aboriginal Tullamareena . The area is characterized by new housing developments and light industry. The main landmark in the mostly flat topography exposed to the hot north winds of Melbourne's summer is the nearby airport . The suburb has only been developing since the 1970s when land prices fell due to its proximity to the airport. The architecture is mostly functional.
