The Melbourne Airport (engl. Melbourne Airport , IATA code : MEL , ICAO code : YMML ) is an international airport 22 kilometers north-west of Melbourne in the suburb of Tullamarine , Victoria ( Australia ). In addition to Melbourne Airport - also known as Tullamarine Airport - there are three other, smaller airports in the greater Melbourne area: Avalon Airport near Geelong , the old Essendon Airport and Moorabbin Airport south-southeast of the city center. It serves as a hub for Qantas and Virgin Australia .
The airport has two runways and four terminals. It is open around the clock .
The airport operator is Australia Pacific Airports Corporation Limited (APAC)
history
Melbourne Airport opened on July 1, 1970 to replace Essendon Airport, which was nearing capacity . The new airport was built a few kilometers further outside.
In 1997 the airport was privatized. The original name Tullamarine Airport was given up in favor of Melbourne Airport , but the first name is still used in the flight plans of some airlines. It is the first airport in Australia to be modified for the Airbus A380 .
Airport facilities
Melbourne Airport has four terminals:
- T1 is used by Qantas and Qantas Link and has 22 gates
- T2 is the international terminal and has 16 gates. This terminal will be, among others, Qantas , Jetstar Australia , Emirates and Singapore Airlines used
- T3 is used for domestic flights by Virgin Australia .
- T4 is used by the low-cost airlines Tiger Airways Australia and Jetstar Australia as well as the regional airlines Airnorth and REX and the airline Alliance Airlines .
Virgin Australia uses the terminal for its domestic A330-200 flights.
