location

The Tullnerfeld Donau-Auen are located in the Tullnerfeld between Krems and Vienna and extend mainly on the northern, but to a small extent also on the southern bank of the Danube and are one of the largest contiguous alluvial forest areas in Austria.

Protected area

The Tullnerfeld Danube floodplains were designated as a bird sanctuary in 2004 and a flora-fauna habitat in 2011.

Although the hardwood and softwood meadows as well as the water bodies are hydrologically impaired due to the regulation of the Danube and the existing power plants, they are the most important distribution area in Austria for the oak-elm-ash floodplains and the alder-ash-willow floodplains. Interspersed in the wetlands are wet meadows and steppe-like dry grassland, which serve as a habitat for many native birds and as a resting place for many migratory birds.

Numerous rare fish species, river and pond mussels , beavers , amphibians and insects live in the Danube and its side arms and oxbow lakes .
