The Tunnel de Saverne is a 4020 meter long railway tunnel in France , completed in 2015 , in which the tracks of the high-speed line LGV Est européenne cross under the main ridge of the Vosges .

Starting position

Since June 2007, high-speed trains have been running from Paris via the LGV Est européenne in the direction of eastern France. The first phase of construction ends in Baudrecourt, Lorraine . Trains to Alsace use the tracks of the Paris – Strasbourg line from there . In particular, their winding Vosges crossing does not allow high speeds. A second, 106-kilometer-long section of the high-speed line connects Baudrecourt with Vendenheim at the gates of Strasbourg . In the course of this, the tunnel de Saverne was built. The western portal is at route km 372, the eastern one at route km 376. The tunnel runs at a 1.9 percent gradient from east to west.

Planning and construction

A tunnel was planned that runs north of the eponymous city of Saverne parallel to the A4 autoroute . At the end of 2009, a tendering process began in which five companies were invited to participate. The award was originally supposed to take place at the end of 2010 and construction to start in early 2011. In fact, RFF awarded the work in mid-September 2010. In the course of this procedure, it was finally clarified that the tunnel will be built with two tubes. The actual construction process was also determined. The tunnel is designed for a speed of 320 km / h. In March 2011, the fall of 2011 was announced as the date for the start of construction. Construction finally started on October 20, 2011. The tunnel will be built with a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 10.07 meters, it will be equipped with segments as an inner shell. The manufacturer of the tunnel boring machine is Herrenknecht . The tubes are to be driven from east to west. The advance speed is 20 meters per day. The tunnel will cost 185 million euros. The first of the two tubes erupted in June 2012. At the end of September 2012, the drive for the second tube began. More than 1000 m were excavated within a month, which corresponds to a daily output of 34 m. On February 25, 2013, the second tunnel tube was also completely excavated. The two tubes are 15 to 30 m apart, and they are connected to one another via seven cross tunnels.
