Tupiocoris rhododendri is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 4.0 to 5.0 millimeters long. The species is easily recognizable by its black pronotum with white collar and by the light, otherwise dark antennae at the base and at the tips . The compound eyes are relatively far forward.

Occurrence and habitat

The natural range of the species is the east of North America. From there it was introduced to Europe, where it was first detected around London in 1971. Since 2002 the species is also from the Netherlands and Belgium, since 2004 also from the west of Germany (Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia). It can be assumed that the species will spread further to the east and south, especially through the transport of its food plants, which are used as ornamental plants.

Way of life

The bugs live predatory on rhododendrons and suckle on fringed winged birds and aphids . The overwintering takes place as an egg. The nymphs occur mainly in June and July, the adults can be found until September.
