Turbinicarpus viereckii is a species of plant in the genus Turbinicarpus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the discoverer Hans Wilhelm Viereck .
description
Turbinicarpus viereckii grows individually or in groups with blue-green, spherical to spherical-cylindrical bodies and has fiber roots. The bodies, which are covered in white at the top, reach heights of 2 to 7 centimeters and a diameter of 3 to 6.5 centimeters. Their more or less conical humps are 5 to 6 millimeters high. There are 3 to 5 protruding, straight, slender central spines with a length of 7 to 20 millimeters, which are white with a darker tip. The radial spines radiating from 13 to 22 are white, straight and 8 to 13 millimeters long.
The flowers are either magenta with a white throat or completely white. They are 1.5 to 3 centimeters long and 1.5 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The slightly elongated, brownish green fruits are 5 to 8 millimeters long.
Systematics, distribution and endangerment
Turbinicarpus viereckii is distributed in the Mexican states of Tamaulipas , Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí . It was first described as Echinocactus viereckii in 1931 by Erich Werdermann . Václav John and Jan Říha (* 1947) placed them in the genus Turbinicarpus in 1983 . The following subspecies are distinguished:

- Turbinicarpus viereckii subsp. major (Glass & RAFoster) Glass
- Turbinicarpus viereckii subsp. neglectus D. Donati & Zanov.
- Turbinicarpus viereckii subsp. reconditus Labhart
Synonyms are Gymnocactus viereckii (Werderm.) Backeb. , Pediocactus viereckii (Werderm.) Halda , Thelocactus viereckii (Werderm.) Borg and Neolloydia viereckii (Werderm.) FMKnuth .
Turbinicarpus viereckii is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN from 2002, she was as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. classified as low risk. In 2013 the species is known as " Least Concern (LC) ", i. H. not endangered.
