Turgut Öker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Turgut Öker (* 1961 ) is the chairman of the Alevi Union Europe (AABK) and honorary chairman of the Alevi Congregation Germany (AABF), which he represented from 1999 to 2012 as national chairman. From June to November 2015, Öker was a member of the Halkların Demokratik Partisi (HDP) in the Turkish parliament .

Life

In the 1980s, Öker published the political magazine “Göçmen” (Migrant) in Hamburg . After he was hired, he switched from social policy to religion and became the head of the Alevi association . Öker has held the office since 1999. The introduction of Alevi religious instruction in the federal states of Berlin, Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria are considered to be an important achievement of his term of office. This can also be seen as a central milestone in the history of the Alevis, who are not recognized as a religious community in Turkey.

In 2007 Öker took part in a conference in the European Parliament with the title “What kind of Turkey do the Alevis want?” And drew attention to the lack of dialogue between the Turkish government and the Alevis. In addition, he described the Alevi doctrine as being suitable for completing the European value system.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Alevi Congregation in Germany, a ceremony took place in Berlin in 2009 , at which Öker spoke to Maria Böhmer , Franz Müntefering , Cem Özdemir and other members of parliament.

On the evening of December 17, 2010, Öker was arrested by the Turkish authorities at Istanbul Airport on the basis of an arrest warrant issued in November 2010. Öker wanted to take part in a memorial service for the victims of the Maras massacre , during which several hundred Alevis were brutally murdered in Kahramanmaraş between December 22 and 25, 1978 . The background to his arrest are alleged statements by Öker on the Turkish TV broadcaster Yol TV in 2008, with which he allegedly attacked İzzettin Doğan , the chairman of the right-wing conservative Turkish Cem Foundation , on the occasion of a television appearance . After a night in prison, he was released early the next day.
