Turgut Cansever

Turgut Cansever (born September 12, 1921 in Antalya , † February 22, 2009 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish architect and writer . He was the only architect to have received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture three times .

Life

Cansever attended the İstanbul Devlet Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi , where he was a student of Sedad Hakkı Eldem . In 1946 he finished his studies. In 1949 he received his doctorate in art history . He then took up teaching at the university. In 1951 he founded an architectural office. It started in an international style in the 1950s . As one of the few Turkish architects, he tried to achieve a synthesis between tradition and modernity. From the 1960s onwards, he made a contribution to the revival of Ottoman architecture and the use of ornamentation . His style was also a model for subsequent generations of architects. One of his most important buildings is the Turk Tarih Kurumu building .
