life and career

Turi Ferro was primarily a theater actor and earned great recognition here; In the course of his career he played in theater productions by famous directors such as Roberto Rossellini and Giorgio Strehler . Together with his wife Ida Carrara (1928–2013), with whom he remained married until his death and had three children, Ferro founded his own theater production in 1953. Five years later he was also a co-founder of the Teatro Stabile di Catania theater in his hometown of Catania. Ferro starred in many locally-based works by Sicilian authors and was widely considered the best Sicilian actor of his generation. Director Lina Wertmüller , with whom he worked on three film projects, also wrote in 2012 that Ferro was the “greatest Sicilian actor behind Angelo Musco ” (Musco, 1872–1937, is considered a Sicilian theater legend). The British The Guardian saw him in his obituary as one of the greatest Italian theater actors of the second half of the 20th century, who had played convincingly in both classics and contemporary plays.

In film and television productions, Ferro was only over 40 years old in front of the camera, here he played a mafioso in Lina Wertmüller's Mimi, offended in his honor and had one of his few main film roles in the 1974 comedy Virilità . For the role of a widowed father who wants to marry his maid in the comedy Malizia , he received the 1974 Nastro d'Argento for Best Supporting Actor . In the same year he also received the David speciale , a special prize among the David di Donatellos , which was awarded to him for his life's work and the high quality of his depictions. On television, Ferro was seen several times in mini-series on the broadcaster Rai . His last role was in 1998 in Tu Ridi , directed by Vittorio and Paolo Taviani .

At the beginning of 2000 Ferro fell on stage and could no longer walk. He died of a heart attack in May 2001 at the age of 80.
