The tower

The clock tower of Rupprechtstegen

The tower was previously used to dry fire hoses . While the old fire engine is in Lungsdorf, the new fire station and fire station stands a little above the old fire station, which was demolished in the 1960s. Only the old drying tower built in the 1870s has remained. It serves as a tower for the old station clock , which was retired in 1936.

The old train station was thirty years longer than the clock. The former station building is still standing, but the Rupprechtstegen station no longer exists. Immediately next to it, as a modern replacement, a breakpoint was set up as a shelter made of steel, plastic and sheet metal, with a ticket machine and a bank. The clock or clockwork was built in 1876 by the Munich company Johann Neher and had performed its services for the newly established railway line from Nuremberg to Neuhaus an der Pegnitz . When the station clock was taken out of service by the former Reichsbahn , they did not want to dispose of it. The municipal councils of Enzendorf, the mayor's office were in Rupprechtstegen, the police station and the post office and telegraph office wanted to set up the clockwork in the drying tower of the fire brigade at that time . In May 1936, the old station clock was installed in the tower in the center of the town by the Johann Förster company.

The tower stands on a square wall plinth, the lower half of the framework is lined with stones, the upper half is covered with vertical wooden boards and provided with ventilation windows; this is how you can still recognize its former function. The tower is about five meters high, covered with a four-sided tent roof and has a roof turret in the middle.

A narrow wooden staircase leads up in the tower and gives access to the clockwork.

The clockwork

Upper part of the clock tower

It is a clockwork with a pendulum and a winding mechanism with weights. The manual winding with a crank on the mechanism is located at the top of the tower. Of the two bells with mechanically driven swinging clappers , one each indicates the full hours and one the quarter and half hours. The movement runs for about 24 hours and has to be wound up every day. The bells had already been turned off, it was often very loud and disturbed the sleep of the Rupprechtstegen people in the immediate vicinity. The Weber family, who live next door, have been trying to maintain it for years; it winds the watch up once a day so that it always shows the correct time. However, it is not always accurate.

The time is displayed in three directions , the bell bodies are in the fourth direction. The three dials are simple and smooth, with black time markers on a white background and Arabic numerals . The hands are black in a contemporary style. The clock is clearly visible from afar. The tower is on the thoroughfare in Rupprechtstegen, halfway to the train station.

At the beginning of 2007, the listed clock tower was partially renovated with funds from the village and corridor renewal .
