Turoš ( German : Turosch ) is a Croatian traditional regional cow's milk cheese specialty, which is mainly found in the Međimurje region (northern Croatia). This cheese is made from a type of cream cheese ( quark - or cottage cheese - similar) with some ingredients or spices .

Manufacture and properties

The ground red peppers , salt , garlic and caraway seeds are added to prepared cream cheese made from cow's milk and mixed together, giving the mixture a light orange or apricot color. From this prepared mass the real cones (cones) with a height of about 6 cm (sometimes about 8 cm) are made. Turoš pieces made in this way have to dry and mature in the sun for about three days before they are ready to be served. They can also be smoked, giving them a special taste.

Turoš is very often produced in Međimurje by farmers themselves, but also industrially (in small dairies ). The name "Turoš" is derived from the Hungarian word túró or túrós and means quark or cottage cheese .

use

Turoš is mainly used as a snack or starter . This specialty is eaten straight away, on its own or with bread , onions and pickles , or served as part of cold cuts .
