Twisted Metal is a series of racing games originally published by Sony Computer Entertainment and associated studio SingleTrac . The first series part appeared in 1995 for the PlayStation . The following titles, which were developed by changing developer companies, were also primarily designed as console games. Game designer David Jaffe was instrumental in developing most of the parts .

concept

The games of the twisted metal series represent a combination of racing games and shooters. Any number of drivers compete in a cordoned-off, freely drivable area and try to shoot each other out of the race. A wide variety of weapons, such as rockets , machine guns , grenades and napalm, are available to the players .

Twisted Metal, Twisted Metal 2

The first two titles were developed by SingleTrac. They did well in the trade press and are still among the most successful titles in the series. Twisted Metal 2 alone sold an estimated 2.4 million units.

Twisted Metal 3, Twisted Metal 4

Due to disagreements between Sony and SingleTrac, the next two series parts were developed by 989 Studios . The trade press criticized these two titles much more than their predecessors, and the sales figures were also weaker.

Twisted Metal: Black

The first twisted metal title for the PlayStation 2 was released in 2001 under the title Black . It was developed by Incognito Entertainment, which was made up of former employees of SingleTrac. It was received very positively by the public and achieved meta-ratings in the range of 88 to 92%.

Twisted Metal: Small Brawl

Small Brawl was released the same year as Black, but only for the PlayStation. The title was designed for a younger audience, but performed significantly weaker than its predecessor in tests.

Twisted Metal: Head On

Head On is the first PSP title in the Twisted Metal series. It is the first series part that has a full online multiplayer mode .

Twisted metal

After several discontinued developments, the next title for the PlayStation 3 was released in 2012 under the title Twisted Metal .

Film project

In 2012 Sony announced that it wanted to produce a feature film for the game series. Brian Taylor, who has worked on films such as Ghost Rider, was hired as a screenwriter .
