Twisted Metal 2 (also Twisted Metal 2: World Tour and Twisted Metal EX ) is an action-oriented racing game and the second title in the Twisted Metal series . It was developed by the US studio SingleTrac and published by Sony for PlayStation and Windows in late 1996 .

The player takes on the role of one of several selectable characters and takes part in the twisted metal tournament with them. In this, the drivers fight with armed vehicles.

The game is the most successful part of the Twisted Metal series to date. Two years after its release, the title appeared in the PlayStation Greatest Hits series . In 2007, the developers released the title for free download via the PlayStation Network .

action

The action of the game takes place in 2006, one year after the first Twisted Metal part. The city of Los Angeles , the site of the first twisted metal competition, was almost completely destroyed by this. In this competition, several drivers fight against each other with armed vehicles in different cordoned off areas until only one survives in the end. This driver will be named the winner of the competition and will receive any request from the organizer Calypso .

The twisted metal championship of 2006 no longer plays in just one place, but in different places around the world, through which the player fights his way one after the other. He can take on the role of one of a total of 14 drivers.

The competition starts in the ruins of Los Angeles. The next stages are a missile silo near Moscow and the city of Paris . The drivers are then dispatched to the Amazon region . After the player has defeated all opponents there, Minion , the winner of the last twisted metal championship , faces him . After he has defeated this too, the next stages will take place in New York City , Antarctica and the Netherlands . The final of the championship will be held in Hong Kong . After all opponents have been eliminated there, the player is attacked by Dark Tooth , the father of a defeated enemy. With the victory over Dark Tooth the tournament ends and a cutscene is shown in which the player receives his prize in New York. Which sequence is played and which wish is fulfilled depends on the character with which the championship was contested.

Gameplay

General

Twisted Metal 2 combines elements of racing games and third-person shooters . The concept was adopted from the predecessor. The player takes control of a vehicle that is armed with machine guns. In a cordoned-off area, he competes against up to eight also armed vehicles and tries to destroy them.

Race course

The vehicles participating in a fight, up to nine, are distributed to random starting positions along the route. After the start signal, they can move freely on the track and open fire on their opponents.

Power-ups are hidden on the tracks that can be picked up by all race participants. These include weapons and repair kits. Collectable weapons include e.g. B. Napalm , missiles or mines . Repair kits are used to remove damage. Each vehicle has an individual weapon, the stock of which regenerates automatically over time.

An innovation compared to its predecessor is the ability to activate special attacks and defense mechanisms during the race using special key combinations. These include a protective shield or the laying of mines.

stretch

Twisted Metal 2 includes a total of eight race tracks. The racetracks are located in different parts of the world, for example in Los Angeles , where the first twisted metal title was played, in Moscow , in Paris and in Hong Kong . The routes vary between real and fictional. While a route located in the Amazon region has lava flows and underground passages and is therefore clearly fictional, the Hong Kong route has Chinese temples and residential buildings, so it is strongly based on reality. On some routes there are destructible elements in the area. For example, the Eiffel Tower can be blown up in Paris . The route design is action-oriented overall. Almost all areas offer numerous opportunities for jumps and other stunts.

Reviews in game magazines

The PlayStation version often fared much better than the Windows version among critics. The GameRankings website , which collects test reports and determines an average rating, calculated a meta-rating of 86.44% for the former and a meta-rating of 49.50% for the latter.

Jeff Miller from the game magazine GameSpot praises the game concept, which offers a lot of variety and improves the weaknesses of the predecessor. Compared to its predecessor, he also praises the fact that there is more content overall, both in the tracks and in the vehicles. He emphasizes that the routes are based on real environments, while the routes in the predecessor are largely fictional. The author mentions the controls as the only point of criticism, which at least in the PlayStation version is quite cumbersome.

The testers of the editors of the British online magazine IGN Entertainment rated the game mostly positive. Twisted Metal 2's multiplayer mode receives a lot of praise and is considered one of the most entertaining of its kind. They also praise the game concept, but complain that this was largely taken over from the predecessor Twisted Metal . They also criticize weak graphics that are characterized by muddy textures and clipping errors.

Sales figures

Twisted Metal 2 exceeded the sales of its predecessor by far. The PlayStation version of the title sold 1.74 million times in the US alone. Overall, Twisted Metal 2 was the most commercially successful title in the Twisted Metal series to date , with an estimated 2.4 million units sold.
