Two moons
Two Moons (* 1847 in what is now Montana ; † 1917 ), or Ishaynishus ( Cheyenne : Éše'he Ôhnéšesêstse ) (English for two moons ), was a Cheyenne chief . He was one of the military leaders who achieved victory at Little Bighorn against the US Army. He took part in several military clashes with the US Army.
Life
Two Moons was the son of Carries the Otter , a captured Arikaree who married a Cheyenne. Two Moons attained the rank of tribal leader and military leader. He fought against the US Army and took part in the battles of Rosebud against General Crook on June 17, 1876 in the Montana Territory . He also fought in the legendary Battle of Little Bighorn on June 26, 1876 and in that of Wolf Mountain (January 8, 1877). Here General Nelson A. Miles defeated the Indians, who surrendered at Fort Keogh in April 1877 . After his defeat, Two Moons decided to serve the former enemy. He became a United States Army Indian Scout and served under General Miles. Miles respected him and made him head of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation (near Ashland, Montana ). In this role he served as a politician and representative of this reservation .
Northern Cheyenne Reservation
Two Moons traveled to Washington, DC several times to campaign for the rights of his people, the northern Cheyenne, and to improve the poor conditions on the reservations. In 1914, Two Moons met President Woodrow Wilson .
Two Moons was the model for one of James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel.
death
Two Moons died in his Montana home in 1917 at the age of 70. His grave is off US Route 212 , west of Busby, Montana .
