Typographic cycle describes the typical historical lead type path of movable letters out of the type case for the purpose of letterpress printing and back again. The term was coined in 1985 by Martin Boghardt.

The process consisted of the following steps: arranging the letters in lines in the angle hook , joining the lines in the typesetting ship to form columns , imposition of the columns in printing forms , revision of the sentence after proofreading the proofs , then the actual printing process, then washing and dissolving the letters the printing forms and finally putting the letters back in the type case. Correction processes with replacing, inserting or removing individual letters from the sentence disrupted or delayed the work considerably.

The standing sentence was an exception to the principle of the typographic cycle.

“In its form, which has been practiced since Gutenberg's time, letterpress printing is based on the mobility and reusability of individual letters. The printing of a text was carried out in a constant process of upheaval, in which a relatively small amount of letters was repeatedly set, printed and set again after cleaning and "filing". In the minimum case, only the type material was required for the perfecting form of a single sheet in the selected format. "
