Tyranny is a computer role-playing game by the American game developer Obsidian Entertainment and published by the Swedish publisher Paradox Interactive . It was released on November 10, 2016 for Windows , macOS, and Linux . It was created in the wake of the success of the playfully related title Pillars of Eternity , which was also developed by Obsidian Entertainment and on whose technical framework the game is based. The special thematic feature of the plot is a game world in which evil has already won and the player character is in the service of the victorious ruler Cyrus. As prosecutor, judge and executioner in personal union, he should support him in the integration of the last conquered areas and end simmering conflicts, with the player helping to determine the newly emerging order through his actions. The common good-bad story of the genre is largely broken up in the game and an additional incentive for repeated play-through is set with variable possible solutions depending on the player behavior.

The game world Terratus is largely ruled by the godlike ruler Cyrus. After more than 400 years, the borderlands are also the last region under the rule of the tyrant. But despite the ongoing occupation, no peace will come about, even after years. Cyrus is very angry about this and orders his two army groups, the Legion of the Reviled and the Scarlet Order, to finally overthrow the last rebels. In order to increase the pressure, he magically seals access to the region and threatens to kill all trapped people after a period of eight days should not finally return. The mission is made more difficult by the competition between the two generals, the archons Graven Ashe and Nerat's votes, who are vying for Cyrus' favor and trying to pacify the area for themselves. The play figure, in turn, is a so-called destiny binder, who is supposed to resolve local conflicts and restore order on behalf of the ruler. He is prosecutor, judge and executioner rolled into one and makes his decisions as he sees fit. He thus occupies an initially independent position between the individual parliamentary groups. The course of the plot varies depending on the decision of the player.
Gameplay
Before the actual game begins, the history of the conquest is told via on-screen text based on some key events. The player can determine how the respective situations went and what role the tie of fate played in them. This has an influence on the later locations and the relationship between the characters. At the beginning of the game, the player selects an archetype for the character and determines gender and some appearance characteristics. However, character development itself takes place during the game, through the use of the appropriate skills or objects. This will gradually improve the skills. The game is played from an isometric perspective , in which the player navigates his hero character by point-and-click . In addition to the player character, up to three other characters can be combined to form a group that the player controls completely. As usual in role-playing games, the character completes various tasks and fights with his companions against different opponents. Many decisions are made in dialogues and significantly influence the course and outcome of the action. The fights take place in real time, but can be interrupted at any time by pressing the pause button in order to be able to give instructions without time pressure.

Tyranny was announced by Obsidian and Paradox Interactive in March 2016. It was the second cooperation between the two companies after Pillars of Eternity . With Tyranny , Obsidian was able to realize a concept of action that had been under development in various variations under the project names Stormlands and North Carolina since 2006. The core idea has always been to move the player into a world in which evil has already triumphed and the player can no longer stand up for the classic good.
