Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a computer role-playing game from the American game developer Obsidian Entertainment , which was launched in May 2018 as the successor to Pillars of Eternity for Windows , macOS and Linux . Console versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One , which contain all additional content for the game, were released at the end of January 2020. A Nintendo Switch implementation is to follow. The game was financed with the help of a crowdfunding campaign on the Fig platform .

action

The plot of Pillars of Eternity 2 starts five years after the events of the first part. Eothas, the god of light and rebirth, believed to be dead, comes to life in the form of a huge stone statue under the former Caed Nua player fortress. The statue leaves a trail of devastation and numerous dead. The player character known from the predecessor, the Guardian, also wrestles with death. But Berath, the god of death, brings the guardian back to life and instructs him to pursue Eothas and discover his goals. The path leads the player character and his companions into the island world of the Deadfire Archipelago .

Gameplay

Although a saved game can be imported from the predecessor, from which some decisions are taken over and reflected, the player has to recreate his main character at the beginning. As usual, he can define gender, race and class for his figure. The character development has been revised significantly compared to its predecessor and the group size has been reduced by one figure. The basic principle of the game, on the other hand, has remained the same: the player character and his now maximum of four companions are controlled by the player on isometric playing cards via a point-and-click interface. The group takes on orders and fights opposing creatures in order to collect experience points and develop the characters. Many missions can be solved in different ways, including in dialogue. There are four factions that pursue different goals and with which the player can build a positive or even hostile relationship through his decisions. A central point of contact is the player's ship, named Defiant by default, which can be modified and expanded in many ways. With the help of the Defiant, the player explores the game world and thus arrives at the different islands of the archipelago.

development

Like its predecessor, Pillars of Eternity 2 was developed with the help of a crowdfunding campaign with the help of the fans of the Obsidian Entertainment development studio. The campaign started on January 26, 2017 on the Fig platform, with a funding goal of $ 1.1 million. This goal was achieved within a day and by the end of the campaign the pledges increased to 4.4 million US dollars. The campaign thus concluded a little more successfully than its predecessor and enabled the implementation of some additional functions and game content.

“In terms of technology, narrative and play, this is one of the best old school role-playing games, a noble treasure chest full of adventure. You will sink. "

- Jörg Luibl : Test report 4Players

“If the developers still fished in familiar waters with Pillars of Eternity, now they have really (sorry) ventured out into the open sea. Because Pillars of Eternity 2 no longer just feels like Baldur's Gate or nostalgic memories. It has grown into a game of its own that cheerfully enriches the genre with new and clever ideas. "

- Elena Schulz : Test report Gamestar

According to a crowd investor, the game's sales figures were disappointing. Based on the profit distribution, a number of around 110,000 copies was assumed to have been sold.
