Tzomet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tzomet ( Hebrew צומת, In English: street crossing ) is a small secular, right-wing political party in Israel .

history

The party was the first to introduce the slogan “Peace for Peace”, which is used today by all right-wing parties and movements. Tzomet opposes UN Security Council Resolution 242 calling for “Land for peace” and wants Israel not to make any territorial concessions for peace. The party was founded by General Rafael Eitan in 1983. Tzomet was part of Yitzhak Shamir's government in 1990, and Eitan became Minister of Agriculture. However, after Shamir attended the 1991 Madrid conference , the party left the coalition in protest.

In the 1992 elections, Tzomet received eight seats but was not part of the ruling coalition. After the unsuccessful elections in 1999, Eitan withdrew from political life. The party took part in the 2003, 2006 and 2009 elections, but was unable to win a mandate with only 2,023, 1,342 and 1,520 votes.

Tzomet only reappeared politically in the course of the parliamentary elections in Israel in April 2019 and was led by former Likud MP Oren Hazan . However, the party only got 2,417 votes and no mandate.
