UGMK Yekaterinburg ( Russian УГМК Екатеринбург ) is a professional women's basketball club of the Superleague from Yekaterinburg , formerly Sverdlovsk, in Russia .

history

Russian champion 2019

As early as 1938, a women's basketball team was founded at the Uralmasch (heavy machinery factory in the Urals). Initially the club was named "Zenit", in 1958 it was renamed "Trud" and in 1960 was named "Uralmash", which it carried until 2000. The team rose to the highest Soviet league in 1964 and played there until the end. The greatest successes in the Soviet period were two third places at the Soviet championships in 1973 and 1974. After Uralmash was renamed OMZ Uralmash-Ischora in 2000 , the basketball team was sold to UGMK and took over the new company name. Under the new owners, the club became Russian champions in 2002 and 2003 and also won the Euroleague Women in 2003 . The next few years were marked by the national duel, initially with CSKA Samara and later with Spartak Moskovskaya Oblast . However, it wasn't until 2009 that the next success came with the national double (championship and cup). UGMK was able to repeat this success five more times by 2013. Since the team also won the Euroleague in 2013 under the leadership of German coach Olaf Lange , the 2012/2013 season became the most successful in the club's history. Also in 2016 they won the most important European club competition under Lange.
