In everyday language, the USIM card is a SIM card with the USIM application software .

description

In the technical world, the hardware of the SIM card is called UICC. The USIM application software can run on the UICC.

Most SIM cards available from cell phone providers are equipped with both a SIM application and a USIM application. If the mobile station (for example: mobile phone ) supports the USIM application, the USIM application is executed on the SIM card. If the mobile station does not support the USIM application, the SIM application is executed on the SIM card. The SIM application allows registration in GSM and UMTS cellular networks. It is not possible to log into LTE cellular networks with the SIM application. The USIM application allows registration in GSM , UMTS and LTE cellular networks.

Differentiator

The features listed below can be used to identify whether the USIM application is running on the SIM card. The SIM application does not support any of the features listed:

  • Register in the LTE cellular network
  • Saving e-mail addresses as contact details in the phone book of the SIM card.
  • Ability to create and save groups in the SIM card's phone book.
  • More than 255 contacts in the SIM card phone book.

safety

The USIM application enables the mobile station to better encrypt the calls, messages and data transmitted over the cellular network . The mobile station can better secure the authentication of the mobile station with the mobile radio provider thanks to the USIM application. For security reasons, SIM cards with the USIM application should be operated in all mobile stations. Mobile stations that do not support the USIM application should be replaced with newer devices for security reasons.
