The USS Abraham Lincoln (SSBN-602) was a United States Navy missile submarine . She was in the George Washington class . Its namesake was the 16th President of the United States , Abraham Lincoln .
history
The Lincoln was laid down at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1958 and launched there in 1960. The official commissioning took place in 1961.
After a few tests and a short period of lay in the yard ( post-shakedown availability ), the Lincoln moved to Holy Loch , Scotland, in October 1961 , from where she carried out her first patrols as a deterrent . During the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, the Lincoln was in the middle of a standard four-week maintenance period when she was ordered to sail. All work was stopped and the boat went on another 65 day voyage. On October 13, 1965, the Lincoln reached American waters again for the first time, she entered the Electric Boat shipyard , where she was completely overhauled in almost two years, equipped with new nuclear fuel and converted to the UGM-27 Polaris A3.
The boat then returned to Holy Loch and drove from there until 1972. That year the Lincoln was reassigned to the Pacific Fleet, but was again first overhauled at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard . Subsequently, Pearl Harbor became the new home port. However, the Lincoln was used from the advanced port of Apra Harbor on Guam . In 1977, Abraham Lincoln became the first SSBN to conduct its 50th patrol.
In October 1979 the Abraham Lincoln was decommissioned in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard , where it was decommissioned in 1981 and finally canceled as part of the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program .
