The USS Manchester (CL-83) was a Cleveland-class light cruiser of the United States Navy . She was in the service of the US Navy from 1946 to 1956 and was u. a. used before Korea .

history

The keel-laying of the ship named after the city of Manchester (New Hampshire) took place on September 25, 1944 at the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation at the Fore River Shipyard , and it was launched on March 5, 1946. It was put into service on October 29, 1946. Original home port of the USS Manchester was Boston . While a majority of the Cleveland-class ships were mothballed and transferred to the reserve fleet shortly after the end of World War II , only the USS Pasadena and the USS Manchester remained in the active fleet until 1950 and 1956, respectively.

After voyages in the Mediterranean , the USS Manchester was used in 1949 for missions in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait . In 1950 the aircraft on board were replaced by the Sikorsky S-51 . The USS Manchester was the only ship of the class to be used in the Korean War. The ship supported landing forces off Wŏnsan in 1950 and evacuated the crew of the stranded Thai corvette Prasae on January 8, 1951 . In 1952 and 1953, she patrolled the Taiwan Strait and off the coast of Korea on several missions . 1954 to 1955 the USS Manchester was part of the 7th US Fleet (western Pacific and Indian Ocean).

The decommissioning took place on June 27, 1956. The ship was after 1960 by the Nicolai Joffe Corp. scrapped. .
