The Sikorsky S-51 is a further development of the two-seat Sikorsky S-48 . The military designations were R-5 and H-5 . The US Navy also stationed the helicopter on aircraft carriers as the HO3S . The Jak-100 was built as a Soviet counterpart in 1949 .

In 1950, an H-5G was converted into the TH-5G trainer. In 1943, the YR-5A were ordered for $ 63,123 each. The 39 larger H-5Gs were priced at $ 87,315 each in 1948.
