The Fairchild Hiller FH-1100 is a light helicopter made by the American manufacturer Fairchild-Hiller . The development began on the basis of a tender by the United States Army for a light observation helicopter (LOH).

History and construction

In October 1960 the US Army wrote out a tender for a light observation helicopter. Together with twelve other manufacturers, including Bell Helicopter and Hughes Tool Co. Aircraft Division , Hiller entered the competition and submitted a design. Hiller's design, the Model 1100, was one of the three winners in the 1961 competition. The Army now calls the Model 1100 the YHO-5 .

Further work began in November 1961, the prototype first flew on January 21, 1963. The FH-1100 is a light helicopter whose two-bladed rotor is driven by an Allison 250 shaft turbine with 236 kW. Hiller delivered five copies to the army for comparison tests in 1963. After testing, the Bell YOH-4 was eliminated and Hiller and Hughes were now competing for the cost of the contract. In 1965, Hiller was undercut by Hughes and the US Army selected Hughes YOH-6 . Since Hughes could not meet the contractual requirements, the US Army reopened the LOH competition for offers, whereupon Hiller decided to resubmit his original offer with the YOH-5A, and temporarily interrupted development of the civilian version. The Hiller model 1100 was again not used, but was marketed as a civil helicopter.

The FH-1100 was produced until 1973. In 2000 type certification of which was FH1100 Manufacturing Corporation in Century (Florida) , Florida adopted. However, this company does not build new machines, but converts existing ones.
