The Sikorsky S-92 is a medium-weight, two- gas turbine powered, large-capacity helicopter from Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation . The civil version of the helicopter is also called a helibus . The first flight of the S-92 took place in December 1992 in Palm Beach . The H-92 Superhawk and the MH-92 Superhawk are military variants of the S-92.
Variants and usage
S-92 Helibus
The helicopter is primarily bought by governments or used civilly by the oil and gas industry. For shorter distances, the helicopter can offer the same level of comfort as an airliner if the equipment is appropriately high-quality. Special insulation materials and avionics should ensure smooth flight characteristics so that noise and vibrations are reduced to a minimum. The S-92 is therefore used to transport VIP guests, but also for state (sovereign) purposes, for example as an SAR helicopter by the coast guard.
MH-92 Superhawk
The S-92 is being developed into the MH-92 Superhawk naval helicopter . The H-92 Superhawk version of the S-92 helicopter is used for submarine hunting (ASW) and reconnaissance as well as sea rescue missions. Thanks to the very large cabin and the high load capacity of the helicopter, a large number of weapons and military equipment can be carried. In ASW operations, Mark 46 torpedoes are carried along with passive sonar buoys for submarine reconnaissance. Radar sets can be retrofitted as reconnaissance vehicles and special computers can be installed for reconnaissance. In the Canadian armed forces, it will succeed the Sikorsky S-61 Sea King as the CH-148 Cyclone . The flight testing of this version with FLIR and all-round search radar began almost two years later on November 15, 2008 in West Palm Beach, Florida. The $ 1.8 billion program includes the delivery of 28 helicopters. In contrast to the civil version, the MH-92 has a fly-by-wire flight control .
Helicopter for the President of the USA
S-92 was one of the participants in a tender for a new helicopter for the President of the United States . The contract was awarded to the EH101 produced by Agusta Westland, but the program was later discontinued for cost reasons.
On May 7, 2014, the US Navy announced that the Model S-92 had won another tender. The US armed forces are expected to pay $ 1.24 billion for 21 helicopters and two simulators . The first flight of the helicopter designated as VH-92A took place on July 28, 2017 . The first helicopters planned for use as Marine One are due to be delivered in 2018.
