Marine One is the radio call of an aircraft of the US Marine Corps (USMC), which the President of the United States of America has on board. Traditionally, for example, the helicopters that fly the President are provided by the Marine Corps. But it also operates fixed-wing aircraft with which he could fly.

history

The first flight of a helicopter to carry the US President was in 1957 during the tenure of Dwight D. Eisenhower . A military H-13 Sioux was used for this.

The H-13 was then replaced by an H-34 in 1958 ; the Sea King was the first to fly under the radio call name Marine One in 1961. Prior to 1976, the US Army and the USMC shared responsibility for the President's flights, with the USMC also using the Army One identifier when the President was on board .

The helicopters are Sikorsky H-3 Sea Kings or the newer, smaller Sikorsky VH-60 White Hawk . Both designs were to be replaced by Lockheed Martin VH-71 (US101), but this plan was abandoned on April 6, 2009 due to increased costs.

After the Lockheed Martin VH-71 project is completed, there are plans to procure 21 Sikorsky VH-92s . The maiden flight of the specially equipped presidential version was planned for 2017. All 21 copies should be delivered by the end of 2023.

The color scheme is dark green to the top fifth where the helicopters are painted white. On the side you can read “United States of America” in white. The flag of the United States is on the main rotor and the seal of the President is on the side wall under the pilot's window.

commitment

Marine One is selected from a fleet of 19 aircraft. The HMX-1 "Nighthawks" squadron stationed at Marine Corps Base Quantico near Triangle, VA , is responsible for this. Over 800 Marines are involved in the fleet for Marine One.

Marine One is always accompanied by two identical helicopters of the season to attacks to fend off. All crew members and maintenance personnel of the HMX-1 must present the positive results of an intensive reliability check, the so-called Yankee White security clearance . For example, US citizenship and undoubted loyalty to the state are essential.

As soon as the Marine One lands at a destination, it is received by a USMC soldier in dress uniform.

Marine Two

When a Marine Corps aircraft is carrying the Vice President , his call sign is Marine Two .
