The Mighty Mux , as the ship was soon called by its crew, operated mostly in the Atlantic and the Caribbean , but also made several trips with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1966 the destroyer belonged to the salvage fleet of the Gemini 8 landing capsule in the Atlantic, in August 1967 it was part of the salvage fleet for the unmanned AS-202 test of the Apollo spacecraft . After her retirement, the Mullinix remained in the reserve fleet until July 26, 1990 , when she was removed from the ship's registers. On August 23, 1992, she was sunk as a target ship during an exercise.
