The USS Richard S. Edwards (DD-950) was a destroyer of the Forrest Sherman-class destroyer of the United States Navy .

history

Construction and commissioning

The construction contract for the Richard S. Edwards was issued on January 27, 1956, the keel was laid on December 20 at the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company on Puget Sound , Washington . On February 5, 1959, it was put into service with the Navy.

period of service

Her maiden voyage took the Richard S. Edwards to Valparaíso . She was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and used in the Vietnam War. Here, the destroyer belonged temporarily to secure the ASW - aircraft carrier USS Bennington . During a maneuver on August 11, 1960, rudder damage on board the Richard S. Edwards occurred about 175 nautical miles west of San Francisco , which led to a collision with the carrier. Although there were no personnel losses to complain about, the destroyer suffered considerable damage to the superstructure and had to go to the shipyard in San Diego until November 1962 .

From February 27, 1970 to January 15, 1971, she was modernized on the Long Beach Naval Shipyard .

The ship received six Battle Stars .

Whereabouts

After its decommissioning, the ship was sunk in May 1997 as a target ship off Kaua'i .
