The USS Oregon City (CA-122) was a heavy cruiser of the United States Navy entered service in February 1946 . The lead ship of the Oregon City class , consisting of a total of four units, had an active period of service of only 22 months. In December 1947, Oregon City was added to the reserve fleet . The ship lay there for more than 25 years before it was scrapped in 1973.

history

The Oregon City was laid on April 8, 1944 as the lead ship of her class in the shipyard of Bethlehem Steel and was launched on June 9, 1945. The ship, which was designed for use in the Pacific War , was no longer active in the war, it was commissioned on February 16, 1946 under the command of Captain Burtnett Kent Culver, who remained in command of the cruiser until the cruiser was decommissioned.

Their test drive took Oregon City to the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base . She then became the flagship of the United States Fourth Fleet in July 1946. In this role, the ship carried out training maneuvers with reservists off Philadelphia and made a trip to Bermuda in October, also with reservists on board .

After further exercises, Oregon City was in Boston Harbor from March to June 1947 before setting off for a training trip to the Caribbean . The ship ended this last mission in Philadelphia in August 1947.

After the end of World War II, there was less need for large warships like the Oregon City . Several planned units of their class were never completed, but scrapped in the early construction phase after the end of the war. While its three completed sister ships remained in active service through conversions and modernizations, the Oregon City was retired after only 22 months of service and assigned to the reserve fleet. The ship spent there more than 25 years. In 1970 it was removed from the Naval Vessel Register and in September 1973 it was sold for demolition to Union Minerals and Alloys Corporation in Kearny (New Jersey) .
