The USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is a destroyer of the United States Navy (USN) and the lead ship of the Zumwalt class .

Name and body number

Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt , namesake of the USS Zumwalt as well as the Zumwalt- class

The destroyer and the entire class is named after Elmo R. Zumwalt . Zumwalt was a USN admiral and served as the 19th Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) from 1970 to 1974 in the final stages of the Vietnam War . He reformed the USN's personnel policy in an effort to alleviate tension between soldiers of different ethnicities.

The ship is given the hull number DDG-1000 . The USN thus deviates again from its classification scheme. As missile destroyers vessels obtained by the hull code correctly, the identifier DDG for destroyer, Guided Missile (Where DD for destroyer ship and G for guided missile (missile)). The sequential number should have started after USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112) , the last Arleigh Burke- class unit planned at that time . Instead, the USN fell back to the serial number of the old destroyer classification DD . This numbering ran up to USS Hayler (DD-997) from 1983. For symbolic reasons, the two following numbers were also omitted.

history

The USS Zumwalt leaves dry dock

In 1991, the USN launched a program that would create the next generation of warships that would ultimately replace the Arleigh Burke class. In May 2001 the program was stopped because the US government wanted to review armaments spending in the Quadrennial Defense Review and the USN itself wanted to review its procurement strategy. There was a new tender which Ingalls Shipbuilding won. However, after massive criticism from the US Court of Auditors , the USN announced that it would discontinue the program after only three destroyers due to the high production costs of over three billion US dollars per ship and instead procure more Burkes . Since Ingalls is building several other ships for the USN, Bath Iron Works should now manufacture the DDG-1000 .

The USS Zumwalt was ordered on February 14, 2008 and laid down three years later . The launch took place on October 28, 2013 . The USS Zumwalt was delivered in late 2014 and tested for the first time on the open sea on December 7, 2015. It was commissioned on October 15, 2016. It is commanded by Captain Andrew Carlson.

In November 2016, the ship suffered engine damage in the Panama Canal .

Technical specifications

Due to the consistent implementation of stealth technology in the form of carbon fiber materials, a special paint and unorthodox stealth design with angled surfaces, the almost 183 meter long ship looks like a small fishing boat on radar screens. In peacetime it is therefore equipped with large radar reflectors.

Others

The USS Zumwalt cost approximately $ 3.5 billion to build . Currently (2018) the ship is not armed.
