Udalricus of Basel

Udalricus (also Udalrich and Ulrich in the literature ) of Basel (mentioned from 823 to 835 ) was a bishop of Basel .

Udalricus was appointed Bishop of Basel at the end of 823 as the successor to Bishop Haito , who had resigned from his office as bishop and retired to the Reichenau monastery as a simple monk . On May 31, 824, Udalricus entered the city. He was ordained a priest on June 10, 825 . In June 829 he took part in the synod held in the St. Albankloster in Mainz, five years later in that of Sens. 835 he participated in the consecration of the monastery basilica newly built by Abbot Gozbert of St. Gallen . Udalricus died on May 25th .

Udalricus appears in the oldest known list of bishops from the Münster Abbey in Alsace under Pope Paschal I (817–824). Joseph Siegwart's view that Udalricus was provost zu Schönenwerd before his election as Bishop of Basel cannot be proven with certainty. Daniel Albert Fechter suspected that the Ulrichskirche on Rittergasse in Basel, which no longer existed, was consecrated to Bishop Udalricus, but this theory was no longer taken into account in recent literature.
