Udo Klein

Udo P. Klein (born December 3, 1939 in Essen ; † February 11, 2018 ) was a German photographer who became known as an art director / photographer in international advertising agencies from the 1960s and with his own agency from 1979. In 1987 he founded Arcum Verlag with Jörg Krichbaum, which started with the book German Standards and German Standards, Classics of Tomorrow .

Udo P. Klein was born in Essen on December 3, 1939 as the son of the teacher Paula Purrio and the high school teacher Hans Klein. After high school, he attended the Folkwang School for Design in Essen from 1957 to 1962 with the subjects of painting, photography and graphic design . After graduating, he was employed as an art director / photographer in an advertising agency in Cologne.

In 1963 he married Monika Brandenberg. In 1964 son Oliver and in 1968 daughter Eva were born. In the following years he moved from 1964 to 1969 to the "Die Werbe" advertising agency in Essen. His main customers there were Coca-Cola Germany / Switzerland and Smirnoff Vodka. He then went to McCann Erickson Cologne from 1970 to 1972 . From 1973 to 1975 he was creative director of the Cologne advertising agency Prigge und Havel.

Klein started his own business in 1975 and founded his own agency in 1979. In 1975 he rediscovered photography for himself, first in advertising photography and later, from around 1986, in free photography. From 1978 to 1992 Udo P. Klein created around 10 cookbooks on various topics for Pfeifer & Langen and Kölner Zucker , which were sold in a total circulation of several million copies. In 1996 the book “Art at the Hotel” was published, a book about the four art hotels of the Flamberg Group, published by DuMont, Cologne. The book " Szczesny - The Kempinski Art Project Estepona" followed in 2000 . Also in 2000 his book "Art in the Mannheimer" was published, a story about the art collection of the Mannheimer Versicherung. From 2001 to 2002 Udo P. Klein lived and worked in Spain, Marbella and Seville for the international Kempinski group. In 2002 the book “Szczesny Mustique” (a “coffee table” book in the format 29 × 36 cm) was published by teNeues Verlag. The book “Szczesny St. Tropez” was published in 2009 in the same style.

Udo Klein lived and worked in Saint-Tropez and Cologne .
