Udo Nöger (* 1961 in Enger ) is a German artist who is assigned to a gestural-abstract neo-expressionism.

Life

From 1984 to 1990 he attended the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, and from 1990 to 1992 he went on to study in Paderborn, Berlin and Spain. The first major exhibitions and solo exhibitions have already taken place here. As a scholarship holder of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute , Nöger spent two years in New York (1970–1972) and Denver (1990–1992) from 1993 onwards. Nöger's stays on Easter Island (Chile) and on Rarotonga (Cook Islands) at the end of the 1980s were particularly influential in his artistic development. With the traveling exhibition Rongorongo he paid tribute to the Polynesian culture. In particular, the art historian and gallery owner Günter Hepe , who specializes in African and oceanic art, sponsored Nöger and dedicated a solo exhibition to him in 1987/88 and 1998. The stylistic parallels to the art of the South Seas were brought into focus. With several grants and exhibition projects since the 1990s, Nöger moved permanently to the United States of America from 1999. Nöger took part in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe, Asia, North and South America. Works by Nöger can be found in many international museums. Nöger lives and works in San Diego (California). He regularly visits Europe and especially his home region for study purposes and for inspiration.

Aside from Udo Nöger's abstract representations of his early work on canvas and laid paper, which are reminiscent of cave paintings or pictograms, the artist is particularly known for his monochromatic works in shades of gray that appear as if they themselves radiate light. Nöger achieves this effect by stretching several strips of fabric or canvas on a frame, which in turn have been painted or cut beforehand. That is why the works appear more translucent in some places than in others. Nöger is also known for painting the underside of the fabric and using materials of different thicknesses, shading and opacity. This technique is therefore located on the border between painting and sculptural design.
