The Udruženje za jugoslovensku demokratsku inicijativu (UJDI, Association for a Yugoslav Democratic Initiative; depending on the language variety also ... yugosl a vensku ... ) was the first independent political organization in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia .

It was founded in Zagreb in spring 1989 . Initially founded as a group within the mass organization “Socialist Alliance”, it soon took on the characteristics of an independent party. Its supporters were mainly the left-wing liberal intellectuals living in big cities. The UJDI campaigned for civil rights and against the war.

Branko Horvat and Nebojša Popov were the chairpersons, and Žarko Puhovski was the managing director . Other board members have included Bogdan Bogdanović , Milan Kangrga , Lev Kreft , Shkëlzen Maliqi , Vesna Pešić , Koča Popović , Milorad Pupovac , Ljubisa Ristic , Božidar-Gajo Sekulic , Rudi Supek , Ljubomir Tadić , Dubravka Ugrešić , Tibor Várady , Predrag Vranicki and Nenad Zakošek .

In the presidential elections in Serbia on December 9, 1990 , Ivan Đurić, a joint candidate of the UJDI and the Savez reformskih snaga Jugoslavije (SRSJ, Union of Reform Forces of Yugoslavia), came third with 5.5%. In the simultaneous election to the Serbian parliament, the UJDI won a seat for Tibor Várady with 0.4% of the vote.

In 1992 the Serbian national associations of the UJDI and the SRSJ as well as other political groups founded the Građanski savez Srbije (Serbian Citizens' Alliance).
