The platyhypnidium riparioides ( Platyhypnidium riparioides , Syn. : Rhynchostegium riparioides ), and butcher's broom moss called, is a type of moss from the family Brachytheciaceae .
Identifying features
The strong, up to 15 cm long, interwoven, shiny plants are dark green in the lower, older parts, but vivid green in the upper parts. The irregularly branched stems adhere to the substrate with rhizoids. The both wet and dry protruding leaves are ovate, narrow, slightly hollow and between 1.8 and 2.9 mm long. The leaf margin is serrated and more often turned over. The leaf vein reaches about 3/4 of the leaf. The linear, worm-shaped lamina cells are about 50 to 100 µm long and 5 to 9 µm wide. The leaf wing cells are more or less rectangular in shape. The thick-walled leaf base cells are spotted (often indistinctly). The smooth, reddish seta has a curved, oval, nodding or slightly upright capsule, which is dry narrowed under the mouth. Sporogons are usually moderately frequent between August and April. There is a risk of confusion with Amblystegium riparium and Brachythecium rivulare .
Occurrence
The moss mainly lives in oligo- to eutrophic waters, preferring lime-rich water. It is relatively insensitive to eutrophication. It usually occurs in fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams and rivers on rocks in shaded locations near the surface. In deeper water layers it is often replaced by Fontinalis antipyretica .
It occurs all over the northern hemisphere, as well as in South America and Africa . In Central Europe it is common in the mountains, otherwise less common.
