Uferhallen, Uferstrasse 8–11

The Uferhallen are a listed building ensemble in Uferstrasse 8 to 11, on the banks of the Panke in the district of Berlin-Gesundbrunnen . Together with the Uferstudios at Uferstraße 25, the former site of the Berliner Straßenbahn-AG has been one of the central locations of Berlin's art and culture production since 2008.

On the 18,900 m² area there are 80 studios, studio apartments, dance and rehearsal rooms, recording studios, an exhibition hall, workshops, catering and event rooms.

Developed as an art location by Uferhallen Immobilien AG in 2007, the Uferhallen area has been operated by Augustus Capital Management GmbH ( Samwer Brothers ) and separately from Uferstudios (Uferstudios GmbH) since 2016 .

In 2011 the stock corporation was converted into a public company as a safeguard for the cultural location. The 3,300 shares were designed by 132 artists and offered for sale. A large part of the shares remained with the main owner, so that a resale of the site was possible in 2016.

In 2019, the resident artists joined forces with Uferhallen eV with the aim of preserving the listed ensemble and securing it as an art location in the long term.

history

The founding of the Great Berlin Horse Railway in 1873 marked the beginning of the development as a transport depot. When the electric tram operation replaced the horse-drawn tram between 1896 and 1902 , the entire area was converted from a horse-drawn depot to a tram depot. In 1898, the architect Joseph Fischer-Dick built the large tram hall with shed roofs, which consists of a car repair shop and a paint shop. The facades were redesigned in 1956-57. Only the porter and residential building retained its old shape. Between 1926 and 1931 those characteristic clinker stone buildings were built according to plans by the architect Jean Krämer , which combine clear forms of New Objectivity with expressive motifs.

After the Second World War , the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) also used the Uferhallen to repair their buses. In 2007 the depot was shut down and developed by Uferhallen Immobilien AG as an art and culture location.
